Clinical Training

Interventions & Clinical Scope

Fellows gain hands-on proficiency in the full spectrum of advanced pulmonary procedures through supervised patient care, dedicated procedural rotations, and simulation-based training.

Core Procedures & Interventions

Hover over each card to learn more. Our fellows achieve genuine competence — not just exposure — in every procedure listed below.

Bronchoscopy
Advanced Bronchoscopy & Interventional Pulmonology
Diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopy, EBUS-TBNA, endobronchial stenting, foreign body removal, and complex airway interventions. Dedicated IP rotation plus ongoing procedural exposure throughout the year.
POCUS
Thoracic POCUS & Echocardiography
Point-of-care lung and cardiac ultrasound for real-time diagnosis, procedure guidance, and hemodynamic monitoring. Bi-monthly simulation sessions plus dedicated POCUS rotation blocks.
Sleep Medicine
Polysomnography & Sleep Medicine
in collaboration with other hospitals and sleep labs
Full polysomnogram setup and interpretation, PAP titration, management of OSA, OHS, central sleep apnea, and complex sleep-disordered breathing. 4 weeks per year across all 3 training years.
Critical Care
Complex Airway Management & Tracheostomy
Advanced airway techniques, percutaneous and surgical tracheostomy, difficult airway scenarios, and management of patients requiring long-term ventilatory support in the MICU and beyond.
Pleural
Chest Tube Placement & Thoracoscopy
Thoracentesis, chest tube insertion for pneumothorax and pleural effusion, medical thoracoscopy with biopsy, pleurodesis, and indwelling pleural catheter management.
Critical Care
Ventilators & Advanced Critical Care
Management of ventilators, ARDS, and refractory respiratory failure in close collaboration with the MICU. Other advanced ICU interventions including drains, lines, CRRT, and hemodynamic support.
PFT Lab
Pulmonary Function Testing & CPET
Complete spirometry, static lung volumes, DLCO measurement, bronchoprovocation (methacholine/mannitol challenge), inhalational challenge testing, and cardiopulmonary exercise testing interpretation.
Radiology
Thoracic Imaging & CT Correlation
Advanced interpretation of chest CT, high-resolution CT for diffuse lung disease, CXR, PET-CT, V/Q scan, and systematic CT-bronchoscopy anatomical correlation with dedicated thoracic radiologists.

Simulation-Based Procedural Training

Supervised patient care and simulation are the twin pillars of procedural education at KHCC. Fellows build genuine competence through stepwise progression — from task trainer to supervised clinical performance to independent practice.

Bi-monthly simulation sessions supervised by Dr. Naser Mahmoud cover a comprehensive range of clinical scenarios and technical skills.
